Lessons from the frontlines: Protecting California’s migrant workers

Thousands of migrant workers arrive in California each year, promised good jobs—only to face debt, abuse, and even trafficking. California attracts more temporary foreign workers than any other state, but its laws offer little protection from exploitation. Unscrupulous recruiters often charge high fees, deceive workers, and trap them in debt bondage—all while corporations profit.

Freedom United is proud to partner with the Sunita Jain Anti-Trafficking Initiative to organize this crucial conversation on Assembly Bill 1362—a bill that could be a turning point in how California protects migrant workers from coercion and abuse. All living former U.S. Ambassadors to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons support this bill. Ambassador Luis C.deBaca, co-author of the U.S. Trafficking Victims Protection Act, and Ambassador John Cotton Richmond, a leading federal prosecutor and anti-trafficking expert, discuss why AB 1362 is urgently needed. 💻 Watch now to learn what’s at stake—and how we can fight for dignity, justice, and protection for all workers.
