Human trafficking is best understood as a very serious health risk for victims of trafficking, because it is associated with physical and psychological harm. Health care service providers have a crucial opportunity for identification of victims and early intervention to rescue and protect them. They are one of the few groups of professionals likely to interact with victims of human trafficking while the victim is still under the control of the criminals who are manipulating and profiting from them.
