Snakehead smugglers are notorious for illegally smuggling in thousands of Chinese immigrants and threatened to repay debts up to $60,000 USD. The author of this paper interviewed people throughout Chinatown in Manhattan, New York, and found that many interviewees share similar stories. Various neglected and abused children in China were coerced into coming to the United States due to several reasons: the one-child policy, economic pressure, and neglectful parenting.
